Tips For Making Physical Activity
A Way of Life!

There are many benefits to getting physically active and fit.  It reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke, and it helps you control other things like your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and diabetes.  You'll look better, feel better, have more energy, and reduce stress and tension.  So with all these great benefits, it's time to start NOW!

1.  Choose activities you enjoy!

2.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

3.  Start out slow and don't overdo it.

4.  Try to exercise at the same time each day so it becomes a habit.

5.  Drink LOTS of water before, during, and after your workout.

6.  Get your friends and family involved so you have a support system.

7.  Have a back-up plan for bad weather.

8.  Vary your activities so you don't get bored.  For example, walk one day, swim the next, and bike ride on the weekend!  Try some exercise videos.

9.  Try learning a new sport.

10.  If you stop for a time, don't lose hope!  Just get started again!

11.  Don't compare yourself with anyone else.  Your goal should be your own personal health and fitness.

12.  If you feel like quitting, remind yourself why you started and think about how far you've come!

Trying to re-start
Saturday 08-01-2009 9:02am ET

My life it seems.  You know when someone you love is fighting for their life, how consuming that can be.  Well it has with my father.  My Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in May and spent almost 40 days in the hospital.  He came home the second week in July and is getting better.  He continues on with radiation treatments.  His oncologist says that,"surprisingly", he has turned the corner and is responding well to the radiation..the tumor is shrinking.  I want to thank you all for all the e-mails and calls, and especially the prayers for my Dad.  He always says, "I can feel those prayers."  I know through your e-mails that a lot of you have someone close who maybe sick or who have recently passed away.  You are in my prayers, too.

I've never been one to tell people to stop smoking.  There is so much information out there available that if someone chooses to smoke, they realize that they may have to live with the consequences.  But if someone you love smokes, try your best to stop them.  You don't them want to go through this.  There is plenty of great things on this website to get you started to quit.  Plus,  check for seminars from GHS on quitting smoking.

Let's get back to walking.  With so many things going on in all of our lives, i.e., kids out of school, health issues, and just staying busy at work, let's get together and walk!  We've had some great times just walking and chatting, so e-mail me and let me know when you can.  As you know, my schedule is adjustable, so just let me know.  Look forward to getting back on track and seeing you all.
Someone sent this to me. Great advice!

Life is sometimes tough...
Monday 07-06-2009 9:25am ET

I'd like to thank you all for the calls and e-mails about my dad.  He's been in the hospital for over a month now battling lung cancer.  Usually, the first question I get is, "Did your Dad smoke?".  Yes he did.  He smoked for about 40 years and quit 12 years ago. Talking with my father, I told him I wish I could go back to when he was a teenager and talk to him about smoking.  He makes no excuses..he knows it's his fault.  Doesn't make it any easier on the family though.  I go down twice a week and stay with him in the hospital.  Something about being in a hospital just wears you out, I mean just saps your energy.

Thanks again for all the e-mails and all the prayers.

If someone you love smokes, try your best to stop them.  This is awful.

Wasn't easy...but we made it.

Having a rainy Memorial Day weekend was tough for me.  Loved being with the family and seeing friends, but too much down time.  Found myself (bored) scavaging through the fridge alot more than I should have and with the rain not nearly enough exercise.  Got a new video coming on Tuesday of my weigh in...sure I haven't gained any but seemed to have stalled.  At least I feel that way.  Going out of town this weekend and all ready to bring my walking shoes with me.  Fingers crossed for Tuesday!  Have friends..get them to join our team for Activate Upstate!  All the info to the left of the page.

A BIG Thank you!

To all the runners and walkers in the grand opening of the GHS Swamp Rabbit trail last Friday night.  they expected around 700 people, ended up with 2200!  Amazing.  Thanks to all on the Kix team for walking with me, too.  If you can, this Friday there is gonna be another walk starting at noon (I know, a little tough for a lot of us).  It will start at the fountain of the Caine Halter Branch of the YMCA in Greenville.  Folks will walk for about 45 minutes.  The info is on this page below.

The weather looks (at this point) like it's gonna be fantastic!  We'll meet at the picnic shelter in front of the Greenville Zoo then walk over to the new Rabbit Trail for a couple of miles.  Click below for Rabbit Trail info.  We should be done by 10 or 10:30.

Biometric Screening
Tuesday 04-21-2009 4:29pm ET

Last week I went over to the Life Center of the Greenville Hospital System.   You get your finger pricked and give a little blood, and within minutes had the results on my cholesterol, triglycerides, and other stuff to let me know how my "insides" are doing.  Cholesterol was a little high..215.  (At one point last year I was at 260, so at least I'm heading in the right direction.)  Everything else was good.  For a nominal fee, (I think around $40)  you can get it done, too.  No waiting around for days for results. You'll have them before you walk out the door.  I recommend this just to keep check of your vital signs.  Also, the folks at the Life Center are friendly and easy to work with.
